In October, we turn our hearts to breast cancer awareness — because early detection, education, and support make all the difference. At Crescent City Optical, we believe in caring for vision and the whole person  which means encouraging health in every area of life. Below is what every woman (and person) should know especially in New Orleans/Marrero about spotting early signs, getting screened, and finding local resources.

🔍 Early Warning Signs to Watch For

Breast cancer doesn’t always cause pain or obvious symptoms early on. But if you notice changes, don’t ignore them, it's always better to check. Some early signs include:

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm (armpit)

  • Changes in size, shape, or symmetry of the breasts

  • Skin changes: dimpling, puckering, redness, or texture changes

  • Nipple changes: inversion, discharge (not breast milk), crusting

  • Unusual swelling or warmth in part of the breast

  • Persistent pain in one area of the breast

If anything feels “off” or new, it’s worth getting it checked . Even if you don’t have a family history.

🩺 How Often to Get Screened

  • For average-risk women, many guidelines suggest starting regular mammograms around age 40–45, and repeating every 1–2 years.

  • If you have higher risk (strong family history, genetic predisposition, prior breast changes), your doctor may recommend earlier or more frequent screening.

  • Even insured women can face barriers like high deductibles, co-pays, transportation issues, or clinic access which is why support programs exist to help.

📍 Local Resources in the New Orleans / Marrero Area

🧭 Tips to Navigate the Process More Easily

  1. Call ahead — clinics like Women’s Imaging may offer walk-ins, but screening slots fill up quickly.

  2. Ask about patient navigators — many programs (like LBCHP) offer a person to assist with scheduling, transport, insurance issues, and making sure you don’t fall through the cracks. lbchp.org+2lbchp.org+2

  3. Don’t skip follow-up tests — if a mammogram or imaging shows something that needs additional work (ultrasound, biopsy), act quickly.

  4. Use mobile clinics — they bring services into neighborhoods and reduce the burden of travel.

  5. Access financial aid — if costs are a barrier, apply to local and national assistance programs (see table above).

Breast cancer is personal — and it affects many families in New Orleans and beyond. But you aren’t alone. Screening, early detection, knowledge, and support can change outcomes. Crescent City Optical encourages every woman in our Marrero community to be proactive about her health — because seeing clearly means more than eyesight.
