Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide, yet it's also one of the most treatable when detected early. Despite its prevalence, many men are still unsure about what it is, how it develops, and what warning signs to look out for. This blog post breaks down the essentials of prostate cancer—its causes, symptoms, screening, and treatment—so you can stay informed and proactive about your health.

The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It plays a key role in the male reproductive system by producing seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.

Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate begin to grow uncontrollably. While many prostate cancers grow slowly and remain confined to the gland, some types are more aggressive and can spread quickly to other parts of the body.

Several risk factors can increase a man’s chances of developing prostate cancer:

  • Age: Risk increases significantly after age 50.

  • Family History: Having a father or brother with prostate cancer doubles your risk.

  • Race: African American men have a higher risk and are more likely to develop aggressive forms.

  • Diet & Lifestyle: Diets high in red meat and low in fruits and vegetables may contribute.

In its early stages, prostate cancer may not cause any noticeable symptoms. However, as it progresses, men may experience:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination

  • Weak or interrupted urine flow

  • Frequent urination, especially at night

  • Pain or burning during urination

  • Blood in urine or semen

  • Pain in the hips, back, or pelvis

Keep in mind, these symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions like an enlarged prostate or infection. Still, they should always be discussed with a healthcare provider.
